Week 10 - Part 1: Adding Human Interest to Business Blogs

Blogging is an important tool to reach customers.  It can offer expert advice, a place to connect (forum), a place to park business related information and a way for the people to find you on the vast Internet through SEO (Ref: Blog4Business18.pdf).

Adding human interest and a personal touch to a blog is important to give the attention to the customers or future clientele.  Keeping a blog up to date with fresh posts, responding to comments and inquiries enhances the business reputation with responsive customer service.  When I don't receive a response when making an inquiry, I develop a negative perception of the business.  The human touch and connecting with customers should be a priority.  "Your brand is heavily judged in the digital age by its online interactions, so the more you connect, the better."

A Fily Willy Auto Care example to using a personal touch would be adding customer testimonials and reviews to the blog.  The benefit of sharing our business' focus on customer service and friendliness will further increase the reputation of a helpful business.   The testimonials would be a medium for customers to share their story and their relationship with our business. Allowing business reviews allows transparency and opens dialogue.  This creates the opportunity to read others' opinions.   A key factor is to remain authentic and if a bad review is posted, acknowledge and respond with a solution and find room for improvement.  This will gain trust with customers of the importance we stress for customer satisfaction.

When not to use a personal touch would be injecting an unrelated opinion into an informational blog or using sarcasm.  The blogger needs to be mindful that when writing a post, there may be an intended audience, but the blog is available to anyone (unless login is required).  So the importance of adding the human touch is to ensure it is conveyed appropriately and balanced, as the old adage goes, not everything applies to everyone.

An example of an appropriate opinion in the case for Fily Willy Auto Care is to support a specific oil brand used at the shop and the reasons it is a preferred product.  This adds a human touch to the blog with professional experience and conveys the knowledge our technicians possess.

Another avenue for adding a personal touch would be humor to increase engagement with customers.  With so much information available on the Internet, personalizing a blog will strategically enhance marketing and add value to the business brand and gain a competitive edge in a busy market.

  1. I agree that testimonials are a perfect way to add personal touch to a business. Showcasing testimonials allows potential customers to relate and visualize themselves as potential clients. They want to know the experiences of past customers, and assuring them with positive testimonials will help your business in the long term.
